Method for predicting corrosion performance of coatings

CORROSION PROTECTION:

PASSIVATION of conventional metals with
ORMECON (a polyaniline)

The organic metal "ORMECON" (a polyaniline, PAni) offers a completely new corrosion protection mechanism: metals like iron, steel, aluminum or copper can be passivated, when coated with PAni. This principle is based on the specific properties of this new material: the polymer is an organic metal with a normal potential close to silver (hence can be regarded as a noble metal), and it is also a redox catalyst.

The mechanism principle:

As soon as a metallic contact is made between the conventional metal to be protected and PAni, the surface potential of the former is shifted by up to 800 mV towards the noble region. Parallel to this, a complex redox-reaction is taking place with the result that a passivating metal oxide layer (Fe2O3, Al2O3, CuO) is formed catalyzed by PAni. Both process steps work together and result in a significant reduction of the corrosion velocity, by a factor of 10 up to several 1000. (For more information, please consult the technical and scientific literature published by ZKC.)

PAni concentrates for formulating passivation primers

Paint manufacturers are enabled to formulate their own primers using predispersed and highly concentrated PAni in different binder matrices. This organic metal is extremely difficult to disperse, and therefore such predispersions are indispensable. They are used with a concentration of about 3 - 5% (depending on binder content). Other binder systems than those actually available as standard systems can be asked for.

Anti-Corrosion coating

The anti-corrosion effect of Polyaniline is best realized when using the complete CORRPASSIV coating systems, consisting of primer and top coats. Various available coating systems are CORRPASSIV 4900, CORRPASSIV 4901, and Skippers CORRPASSIV. Suitable primers contain between 2 and 4% PAni. Zipperling has developed several primers which allow the use of PAni in the new passivation process. They are offered to those companies who are not equipped or do not intend to develop and manufacture their own primers.

Coating system

The coating is finished with a top coat, whose type is depending on the practical demands. Alkyd systems are used in less critical environment, acrylic systems are well suited for general applications, 2-component systems like epoxies or urethane coatings are preferred for extreme demands. Zipperling does not manufacture top coat systems, but is testing and recommending suitable combinations of primers and top coats.

Reports on applications already realized and test results are available.

Scientific literature and additional reading material discribing the unique properties of polyaniline is available.
